6 Tips To Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

6 Benefits of CrossFit

A new year often feels like a fresh start and an excellent opportunity to eliminate bad habits and establish new routines that will help you grow and improve your life.

But chances are you’ve made a New Year’s resolution and then broken it. No matter what change you’re trying to make, whether it’s improving your health or getting rid of a bad habit, remember that the keys to success are scale, consistency, and constant progress.

For 2020, stop the cycle of resolving to make a change and then not following through. Here are six tips that will help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions.

Keeping Your Resolutions

Create Reasonable Resolutions

When making your resolutions for the new year, make them realistic and attainable. A good resolution is also something that you can manage and measure.

Having a challenge is good, but if you take on something too ambitious or demanding, you’re setting yourself up to fail.

For lasting success throughout 2020, break your larger goals up into measurable mini-goals. Focus on the smaller goals one at a time and work yourself up.

Make Your Goals Specific

Every year, millions of adults resolve to “lose weight” or “get in shape” during the new year. But instead of selecting such an ambiguous goal, focus on something more specific.

Instead of saying you’re going to work out more this year, tell yourself you’ll go to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:30 PM. The more specific you can be with your goals, the more likely you will. Focusing on a specific goal also allows you to develop a plan to accomplish your goal for the year and makes you more likely to follow the routine.

Write Them Down

After you’ve figured out what you want your measurable and specific resolutions to be for the year, write them down so you can visualize them daily. See yourself achieving these goals you’ve set for yourself.

By writing your goals down, and visualizing them, you’re planting these thoughts deeply into your subconscious. It can be a useful tool for making progress. Make sure you place this list in a spot that you’ll see often. A computer screen, refrigerator, or mirror are good places.

Having a detailed written plan can make it easier to stick with. Having a plan allows you to consider what tactics you will use when you are faced with barriers to success. When things get difficult, what strategies will you use to stay on the path toward success?

Be Consistent

Building good habits and achieving your goals means you have to be consistent, and developing a routine can help you.

Consistency also means holding yourself accountable, which means you cannot just work at your resolution whenever the mood strikes you.

Here’s an example of being consistent in your diet. You can’t expect to lose weight if you eat poorly all week and then decide to eat healthy on the weekend. Cleaning up your diet means eating nutritious meals all week long. You’ll never hit your fitness goals without consistency.

Track Your Progress

Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated.

By focusing on your mini-goals, and working on them consistently, you can make constant progress. Achieving and celebrating small milestones will allow you to make your own inspiration.

So, instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for every five pounds lost.

Seeing your progress will keep you dedicated and motivate you to keep going. You’ll also have more confidence and feel more positive about decisions to make a healthy change.

Forgive and Move Forward

Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions. If at first you don’t hit your goals, don’t sweat it too much.

Move forward and use it as motivation to put in more work. You’re going to slip, and you’re going to fail. Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal.

Forgiving yourself is part of the process if you want to succeed and hit your goals by the end of the year. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time.
